Student Staff Spotlight

Recent fashion design and merchandising graduate Gabriella “Gabby” Rivera started using the SRWC as a member as soon as it opened in 2010—and was instantly hooked. The following year, Gabby joined the ASI Recreation team as a weight room attendant and continued with the organization for the next four years!

“The SRWC staff was really fun and inviting, no matter what department they were from,” said Rivera. “I saw a lot of people come and go that graduated before me, but everyone was really nice to work with.”

As a weight room attendant, Rivera maintained the weight room area, signed up members for instructional processes, ensured that people were working out in correct form and assisted members with whatever they needed.

“Over my college career, I’ve enjoyed the [SRWC] because the staff has always been very open to learning how they could improve,” said Rivera. “There is also more variety today, as we try to stay up-to-date with whatever trends are popular in the fitness world.”

Beginning at the SRWC as a member and working out with one of the personal trainers, Rivera quickly pursued a position as staff because of how positively she felt the team engaged her. And she encourages students to do the same.

“Students should take advantage of the SRWC because it’s there at their fingertips,” said Rivera. “We offer several classes and group fitness opportunities, and if you don’t like working out with a large group of people, there’s swimming, the rock wall and a number of other opportunities. There really is something for everyone at the SRWC.”

As a recent graduate, Gabby has since left the SRWC and is pursuing a career in design and merchandising. On behalf of all of the entire ASI Recreation team and the Associated Students, Inc., we thank you Gabby for all of your hard work and for always remembering to ‘keep students first!’
