Did you know that some of the best camping opportunities are right here at The Beach? If you’re looking for a simple, yet exciting one-day camping trip full of fun activities, you don’t have to look too far! One of the best ways to explore camping is through the Rock & Outdoor Adventure (ROA) department: a branch of our beloved Student Recreation & Wellness Center (SRWC). The ROA trips offered here at Long Beach State University (LBSU) are guided tours designed to eliminate the burden of planning while still providing an authentic outdoor experience.
Not only is it an easy way to get outdoors, but it is the easiest way to experience extremely popular camping sites. LBSU favorites include the Joshua Tree and Leo Carrillo Camp & Hike, as well as coastal adventures like Bolsa Chica Surfing. These trips are perfect for students who want to camp without prior experience or equipment. ROA handles transportation, permits, equipment and trip leadership, making camping more accessible and less stressful.
Most state parks and popular campgrounds in California require costly reservations, and with popular, high demand spots like Joshua Tree, you’ll often find limited access—up to three to six months ahead, especially in spring or on the weekends. Some options are affordable and easier to book such as the National Forest campgrounds like Angeles and San Bernardino. However, the downside is that these two National Forests are not offered by ROA, so although they’d be a great experience, you won’t have the guidance, the ease and the student discount that ROA has to offer. If you do go and adventure on your own, make sure to arrive early (before 10am), check fire restrictions and have a National Forest Adventure Pass when camping in Angeles.
If you don’t have equipment, and are worried about spending loads of money, we have you covered! Our Outdoor Shop is designed to help students experience, try new things and find love for the outdoors by providing cheap rental services to our students. Items available to rent include tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, backpacks, cooking equipment and more. Renting gear is an affordable way to try equipment before purchasing it, especially if you’re just beginning your outdoor journey or planning a short weekend trip.
Whether you are joining the ROA, or going with friends and family, local camping near Long Beach can be a great adventure offering everything from desert landscapes to oceanfront camping. ROA trips offer a supportive, guided introduction to the world of camping, whereas independent trips offer you freedom to explore it on your own. Either way, ROA is here to be your support system! We at the ROA know that camping is one of the most effective methods to clear your mind, connect with others, and experience Southern California’s outdoors—and we want you to experience it too.
