Fall 2016 Powerlifting Competition Series
Join us to compete for a chance to become the 2016 Powerlifting Champion!
Overall male and female champions along with individual weight class winners will be awarded for each lift. All overall winners will receive a trophy and prizes will also be awarded to the winners of individual weight classes.
Overall Rules & Information:
- Only members of the Student Recreation & Wellness Center will be allowed to compete in the contest.
- The Overall Powerlifting Champion* will be the male and female with the highest pound for pound average percentage from all three competitions.
- Overall bench, deadlift and squat winners will be determined by the male and female with the highest pound for pound percentage for the specific lift. Weight class winners will be determined by the male who lifts the heaviest weight in their division.
- Divisions of the weight classes are listed in the rules for each individual event listed below.
*You must participate in all three events to be considered for the powerlifting champion award.

Bench Press Competition Rules and Information
The bench press competition will take place Wednesday, October 5 in the Main Gym from 4 to 6 p.m. Competitors must pre-register for the contest at the Fitness Desk by Tuesday, October 4.
Rules:
- Participants must be present from start to finish (or at last lift) of the contest. Weight will increase in a 5 lbs. fashion in a stadium format.
- Participants must attend one of the two weigh-in opportunities. The first will be held between 8 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2015 and the second will be held between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the day of the contest at the Fitness Desk.
- Each competitor is allowed a total of three (3) lifts. Only the best of the three lifts will be considered for the final placing in one’s weight division. Lifters may provide their own spotters. If needed, fitness instructors and weight room attendants will also be available for spotting.
- Baggy and/or loose shirts must be tucked in to allow judges to see total body movements.
- Bench jackets will not be allowed.
- Rest between lifts will be three (3) minutes.
Factors Constituting a Legal Bench Press:
- Both feet must be flat on the floor and be on the same spot throughout the lift.
- The buttocks and back must not leave the bench (flat on bench).
- The arms must be straight at the starting lift, lowered down to touch the chest with proper control and smoothly pressed upward until the elbows are fully extended at the final position. Participant cannot begin pressing upward until head judge says “press.” Even-arm-extension is required.
- Any bounces off from the chest position will constitute an invalid press.
- Judge’s decisions are final.
Weight Classes(lbs) Men Women 140 & Under Overall Pound for Pound Winner 141-155 156-170 171-184 185-200 201 & Over *A minimum of four people are required for competition in a particular weight division.
Extra weight divisions may be added or dropped if there is a need.

Deadlift Competition Rules and Information
The deadlift competition will take place Wednesday, October 26 at the SRWC Olympic lifting area from 4 to 6 p.m. Competitors must also pre-register for the contest at the Fitness Desk by Tuesday, October 25.
Rules:
- Must wear shoes at all times.
- Chalk WILL be allowed.
- Change of direction with the bar will not be allowed.
- Weight belts WILL be allowed.
- Participants must be present from start to finish (or at last lift) of the contest. Weight will increase in a 5 lbs. fashion in a stadium format.
Information:
- Participants must attend one of the two weigh-in opportunities. The first will be held between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 25. The second will be held between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. on the day of the contest at the Fitness Desk.
- There will be a designated warm-up area prior to competition time. Please attend 15 minutes before start of competition to get an adequate warm-up.
- Each competitor is allowed a total of three (3) lifts. Only the best of the three lifts will be considered for the final placing in one’s weight division.
- The deadlift does not have a start command. The lifter is able to start their lift when the referee announces “bar is loaded.” The lifter then has one minute to commence the lift.
- The lifter should be facing the front of the platform with the bar laid horizontally in front of the lifter’s feet. The bar shall be gripped at lifter’s choice in both hands until the lifter is standing erect. As the lifter stands erect, knees must be locked in a straight position and shoulders back upon completion.
- When the bar is held motionless and the lifter is in finished position, the referee will signal the lift completed by saying “down.”
- The referee will indicate successful lifts by saying “good lift.”

- Rest between lifts will be three (3) minutes.

Squat Competition Rules and Information
The Squat Competition will take place on Wednesday, November 9 at the SRWC Olympic lifting Area from 4 to 6 p.m. Competitors must also pre-register for the contest at the Fitness Desk by Tuesday, November 8.
Rules:
- Must wear shoes at all times.
- Weight belts will be allowed.
- Participants must be present from start to finish (or at last lift) of the contest. Weight will increase in a 5 lbs. fashion in a stadium format.
Information:
- Participants must attend one of the two weigh-in opportunities. The first will be held between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 8. The second will be held between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. on the day of the contest at the Fitness Desk.
- There will be a designated warm-up area prior to competition time. Please attend 15 minutes before start of competition to get an adequate warm-up.
- Each competitor is allowed a total of three (3) lifts. Only the best of the three lifts will be considered for the final placing in one’s weight division.
- Prior to beginning the squat, the lifter must establish the starting position by moving backwards out of the way from the racks. When the lifter is motionless, spine erect, and knees locked, the referee will give the signal by saying “squat” to initiate the lift.
- Once the signal has been given, the lifter must bend the knees and lower the body until the top surface of the legs (at the hip joint) is lower than the top of the knees. The lift is deemed started when the lifters knees have unlocked.
- During the movement, if the participant cannot lift the weight attempted, they will say “help” indicating a spotter to assist them to rack the barbell. That lift will be disqualified.
- When the lifter has recovered, they must be in the upright position with knees locked once again. The referee will signal to rack the bar by saying “rack.”
- The referee will indicate successful lifts by saying “good squat.”
- Baggy and/or loose shirts must be tucked in to allow judges to see total body movements.
- Rest between lifts will be three (3) minutes.
