Learn to Swim: Group Swim Lessons

Group swim lessons are currently offered to SRWC members in the spring and fall semesters. These lessons are a great way to get to have fun with peers while learning lifelong aquatic skills. Group swim lessons are a 4-week class.

*Class size must have at least six participants to be hosted. No scheduled make-ups for any missed sessions.

The first swim lesson will consist of a skills check, pool rules, and necessary water safety information. Depending on course size and group needs, instructors may break down the large group into subgroups for specific instruction for the remaining three weeks. See below for objectives of possible subgroups.

Group I - Water Exploration

The focus of this group is to allow participants to feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the pool safely. Participants will learn basic aquatic skills such as breathing control, assisted floating, glides, and kicking.

Group II - Primary Skills

The focus this group is to work on movement-based water skills. This involves floating without support, orienting to an upright position, retrieving objects from the bottom of a shallow pool, and the introduction of swimming strokes.

Group III - Stroke Preparation

The focus in this group is to learn how to coordinate swimming strokes. Participants will further improve skills in the front crawl, back crawl, backstroke, and in treading water. Those skills will be refined for participants to be able to do them with ease, efficiency, and power over greater distances and time.
